It transpires that the 'Centre for Lifelong Learning' at Cardiff University where I study languages is thinking about becoming a centre for the Goethe Institut, or at least a centre where Goethe exams can be done. This is excellent! Not only is there a distinct lack of Goethe Instituts here in the UK (there are 3ish), but it shows that the interest in languages and German especially is growing or steady enough to warrant what is quite an expensive project. This will hopefully mean that I don't have to go to London to take an exam in German and thus I can prepare carefully from my own home - which is lush. Goethe exams are known throughout the world and seem the only other way (apart from doing a language degree) to illustrate your capacity in a designated foreign language. I've done B1 and B2 DELE diplomas in Spanish (and I'll do C1 this year) and I'm planning to take A2 in Catalan as well but the extension into German should stand me in good stead. Now we just need my university department to expand into other languages and countries too...
