If you read this article - http://www.elperiodico.com/es/noticias/deportes/20100702/guarani-arma-secreta/360913.shtml - you will undoubtedly learn a thing or two, like I did. The language in question - Guaraní - is the only indigenous tongue in South America to have real clout alongside the more typically dominant Spanish language. Of course Aymara, Quechua and the like have millions of speakers and a healthy future, but Guaraní is the equal of Spanish within Paraguay. An interesting development, given that is is completely separate to the Spanish language, as the article says "Like Basque compared to Spanish". Ouch! Furthermore the attitude of Roque Santa Cruz, their most well know footballer, is curious: He states that it is both a privilege and a priority, fine words from someone whose life is football. Not that I disrespect football, but usually cultural interests and that sport don't go hand in hand.
